I woke up this morning here in VB and this is what I saw! It's early in the year for snow down here, but it looks cool! When we lived in Baldwinsville (B'ville), NY, outside Syracuse, they called this lake effect snow, down here they call it bay effect snow. It's about 38 degrees outside right now, so it's not gonna stick.
The nerve of some people!
I was watching the news yesterday...I still have a lot of time on my hands...and I saw the "big three" in front of congress begging for money.
It wouldn't be so bad if they went up there with their hands out at least looking a little contrite, but these people show up, all flying in their own corporate jets looking for money! One of the talking heads said that GM had 7 of these jets! Seven! And they're looking for a handout?
The UAW, that's United Auto Workers for those that don't know, said they're not giving up anything. What a bunch of crap. This union is one of the biggest problems with the "big three". How the hell can a company compete when they have to pay their employees somewhere in the neighborhood of $75 an hour? These union members have a better retirement plan than the military! Well, honestly, most companies have a better retirement plan than the military...
And these congresspeople ain't any better! They give money to companies like AIG and what do they do with it? They have expensive get aways and leave the taxpayer footing the bill! The automakers are trying to get us to pay the fuel bill for those corporate jets and us little folk are stuck holding the bill.
I say BULLSHIT!!! Take care of yourselves!
You know, I pay my mortgage every month. I drive a car that's been paid for for years. I'm currently unemployed, but I'm not looking for a handout! I'm looking for a way to make it right and I'm sure I'll find it...eventually!
I think I'm gonna use some of my free time and send an email to my congressmen asking for my bailout! I don't need $25 billion, I could get by with just a little piece of that pie! Maybe, a mil, or even half that! $500,000 would work just fine...
It's been two weeks, the world hasn't ended yet. I was a little worried. There's this old joke I know that ends, "Not in my lifetime Jessie.", and if it's true, then December 12, 2012 would be to late.
Anyway, the reason I've been slacking is because I've actually been spending quite enough time in front of the computer the last few days. I'm working on a little website development for a friend. I still have a lot of free time on my hands!
MY Giants are playing great football right now. I've heard a few of the talking heads say that maybe they're peaking to early. I say, maybe they haven't come close to reaching their peak! Those same talking heads are the guys that said the G-Men couldn't possibly run against the number one ranked defense in the NFL. The only reason the Ravens have done so well against the run is because nobody else has Earth, Wind and Fire running for them!!!
Two more years and the Giants will have as many Superbowl rings as the Cowboys. What piece of the past will Cowboy fans grasp for then?
Well, let's see what happens....
I went to the polls here in Va yesterday. The lines were long and short. It all depended on your last name. The A through H line was pretty long and the Q through Z line was pretty long, but I guess all the Jones' had already voted, because their were only 4 people in the I through P line!!!
When my daughter and I walked up to the front of the line like that, with people standing on either side of us, waiting in line, it almost felt criminal! Like we were cutting. A lady in the line next to us told me she had been waiting 2 hours to get as far in the line as I'd just got! I laughed, "Don't blame me!" But I whispered to my daughter, let's remember to thank Pop Pop for this! I was in and out of there in about 15 minutes. But for some reason, even though we know how Va voted for president and senator and congressman, we have no idea who the mayor is yet! The VB vote counters, apparently volunteers, went home last night before they finished counting, so we won't find out until sometime later today.
So Barack Obama is the president-elect of the country. I guess we have to give him a chance to screw it up before we all start screaming that he's gonna screw it up. How much damage can he do in four years anyway? People like to point out that it took Bush 8 and he had a couple of major catastrophes to deal with during those eight years! He ran in the middle, but he's always voted left. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how he governs, since he's never really don't it before.
Here's the big problem I see. Yesterday morning as I was watching the local news, there was an interview with a local woman. She said she was voting for Obama so she wouldn't have to worry about putting gas in her car or paying her mortgage. I'm actually repeating her words as I heard them come from her mouth on the TV. This could be a major setback for our new president when he doesn't deliver on the free gas and no house payment promise that he apparently made and I missed while he was on the campaign trail. But believe me, I'm all for it!
I do have one question though. I understand that this is a very historic election and I believe that black people in our country might feel a little better about their standing in our country and they should. Honestly, to go from the back of the bus to the White House is a pretty significant step, even if it did take 40 years. As Don King would say, "Only in America!" Now every male child can aspire to be the president, no matter his skin color. When a woman becomes president then that'll change too.
But here's my question...Why is it okay for black people to vote en mass for a black candidate? What's makes it so different and okay for black people to do that and not white people? Because anyone reading this knows as well as I do that if white voters voted 90-95% for McCain we'd be hearing it today about what a racist country we live in...and that's just not fair. Is that a place we'll ever get. A place where skin color really doesn't matter? You can try to fool yourself into believing that skin color didn't matter this time, but there were plenty of people that voted one way or the other based on that criteria alone. And that's wrong too.
Got this one from my father...
THIS IS SO TRUE IT HURTS!!!!!!!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's all about the Ice Cream................
The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade in 2000. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class, a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded.
He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down.
The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream".
She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.
Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, and fifty percent of America reacts like nine-year-olds. They want ice cream. The other fifty percent know they're going to have to feed the cow.
