The Ugly American
Got this in an email...
It's very well written and might even make you laugh once or twice...
I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by
now) tricked it.
While I kept it busy tearing the bejesus out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.
Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp.
I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -- like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal.
This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.
This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy.
I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run.
The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head.
Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.
Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.
I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.
So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope so that they can be somewhat equal to the Prey......
Never tried this before...
I took these from the airplane window. The lake pictures were taken outside of Las Vegas. I wish I knew the name of the lake. Looks like it might be pretty nice in the summer.
I thought it might be Lake Tahoe, but I suck at identifying aerial targets. So, if you know, let me know!
This last one was taken just a short while after we talk off from Anchorage, AK.
Alaska is an incredible place! Some of the most awesome scenery ever!
Remember, clicking the pics opens them in another window much bigger!
What an awesome bird!
In 1967 the Bald Eagle was placed on the endangered species list...
Honestly, I think I might have seen one of these beautiful birds in the wild before this week...
As you can see from these pictures, they're far from endangered up here in Alaska...
...actually, they were removed from the endangered species list just last year!
After work this afternoon I decided to go back to one of the spots where these birds seem to congregate and see if I couldn't get a few really special pictures of this magnificent animal...
...How'd I do?
I'm not sure I want to tell you where I found them...it might taint your opinion of them...
...alright...I'll tell you. They like to hang out in two places around here on Kodiak Island. One of the places is around the local cannery...but that's not where I got these pictures...These birds were on the other end of town, hanging out in the trees around the local land fill!!!
But you know what? I don't care! They're still awesome to watch. If it wasn't so freaking cold, I'd probably have stayed out there watching them even longer! But even in the beautiful sunny day that I experienced here today, it was still only in the 20's! Yeah, I'm a sissy! So what! Wanna fight?
Hey...guess what...the Giants won the Superbowl!!! But I guess Eagles are still cool!
Have you ever seen a Bald Eagle in the wild???
They are very beautiful birds. There are so many of them here it's crazy!
I've seen plenty of Bald Eagles, but I don't think I had ever seen one in the wild until yesterday. A local told me they've developed a taste for small dogs...guess my little dog Hazel better watch out or I'll bring her up here!!!
I'm kidding! I wouldn't do that to her...maybe one of my kids, but never one of my dogs!!!
I went out for a drive this morning...late morning, 'cause the sun doesn't come up early around here. It doesn't get light here until around 9 AM.
I found this little post office, it wasn't even open!
Then, I came around a corner and this big ole' bison was just standing there! He just kinda looked at me, stood there for a few minutes until I asked him if he was gonna move or not and then he just slowly walked away...
The views are really spectacular around this little island. I was constantly pulling over to the side of the road to take pictures and catch my breath!
And it's not very often that I see snow on the beach...besides, back home it just look like sand anyway! All the beaches here have these dark rocks. I haven't seen a beach with sand on it yet...although, as far as I'm concerned, the water's never gonna be warm enough to swim in anyway!

My GIANTS are the Champions of the world!!!!!!!
Most of you doubted...some of us didn't...I'm gonna enjoy wearing all the GIANTS gear I packed on this trip!
I'm not gonna wear that hat anymore...it's old and outdated...a collectors item I guess. Something tells me I'm not gonna find a Superbowl Champion t-shirt up here in Alaska, but I'll surely find one for myself and probably one for the Mug too. She's been right there with me rooting on OUR team.
What can you say but...WOW! Eleven straight road wins! The ultimate football road warriors!
What's better than a perfect regular season?
A monster upset of the team with the perfect record in the Superbowl, that's what's better!!!!!
Have a Great Giants day!!!
Hey...I have this hat....it's in pretty good shape...but it seems to just be wrong!
I'm in Alaska this week, so I can't see the faces of the Giants doubters back home...and I really wish I could...
Makes that tattoo of mine look all that much better now!!!
I guess that Green Run kid knew what he was talking about when he predicted a Giants win earlier in the week...Plaxico got a lot of grief for his prediction and he was pretty close on what he called as the final score...I think he said it was gonna be 21-17...well, 17-14 works too!
Hey...to all you Patriot fans...18-1 ain't a bad record....
Alaska is a pretty amazing place!
Here's a couple of pictures for you...this is all you get for now....
...this road warrior is gonna kick back and watch his road warriors play in the big game in Glendale!!!
A little teaser for the weekend...
I'm heading to Kodiak tomorrow. It wasn't in my plans to watch MY Giants in the Superbowl from some bar in Kodiak, Alaska, but that's the way it worked out and it's all good.
I finally got my camera back yesterday morning while I was still up in the Seattle area, and I took advantage of it some this afternoon on my way back to Portland. I figured I'd share a few pics, since I haven't been on in a while.
Just a quick note...I know there's a scientific explanation for this, but it's still really weird! Monday morning, when I went to work in Seattle, it was cloudy rainy and a little cold. I went inside for about an hour and when I walked back outside, the sun was out and it was about 15 degrees colder than it was when it was cloudy! Sorry, but that's just wrong, it's supposed to get warmer when the sun hits your body!!!
I just want you to know that I had to reload these two images about 5 times to get them up here on this page...some nights, I really don't like staying in hotels!!!
This might be one of them!
These pictures were taken along the Oregon coast. I honestly believe that the Pacific Northwest is some of the most beautiful landscape on the planet. I don't think my pictures really do it justice...
Remember, if you click on the pics they open up a lot bigger than they show up on the blog...
Have a nice day!
