  What a day!
I’m on the road this week. I started out on Monday morning with a flight to San Diego. No problems with that part of the trip. Everything went smoothly. I got to San Diego with no problems, even my luggage made it! I worked in San Diego for a day and then I had to fly to Portland, Oregon last night. That went relatively well too, except for that seat in the very last row. They don’t recline you know.

I got up dark and early this morning for my 100 mile drive to Astoria. I bought my GPS on this trip because I had heard that the route I usually take to get out here, I’ve been here twice before, was blocked due to the storms from two weeks ago. The GPS sent me on a road that I’d been told would get me there without a problem.

About halfway down that route the GPS pointed me towards a road called Highway 202. Highway 202 can only be described as a two lane paved logging road. Plenty of twists and turns and not much else. Not many houses and not much traffic either.

I was almost to Astoria, about 20 miles away when I hit a rock in the middle of the road. It didn’t look like a big rock and there was really nowhere for me to go. Double yellow line on a curvy mountain road with who knows what coming toward me around the next bend. So, I went over the rock. Two good size bumps when I did. One when the front wheels went over it and one when the back wheels did.

The next thing I know, the engine is revving, but the car ain’t going. I pull over on the side of the road, get out and smell ugliness. The water running down the side of the road next to the car had this very pretty color to it, you know that rainbow color that petroleum products make in the water. Did I mention it was raining? That lovely Pacific Northwest winter kind of rain?

So I did what any person would do with a broke down rental car. I picked up my cell phone and called the 800 number for roadside assistance. My phone beeps at me and tells me, I have no service. Lovely! I move all my stuff to the trunk and start walking. Remember what I said about this road being really quiet and really empty?

I walked about a half mile to the first house I saw. Two cars in the driveway, but nobody answering the door. I keep walking. Another quarter mile is the next house. There’s a TV on in there and cartoons are playing on it. I knock on the door and a very nice woman answers the door. I explain my situation to her and she lets me in to use her phone.

Sidnie was her name. Sidnie has three beautiful young daughters that are between two and five and boy oh boy that five year old could talk! But it was so cool to me that a woman with three young girls in her house alone would let me in to use her phone. Not only did she let me use her phone, but she offered me a cup of coffee and some Christmas cookies!

I made the phone calls I had to make and then Sidnie surprised me again. She offered me a ride into town! She said she was planning to head into town anyway and she’d be happy to take me along. She then packed up her three little girls and trucked me twenty miles into Astoria…How awesome is that???

To my savior in Astoria all I can say is thank you thank you thank you and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Comments:
Like I said the first time, what a great story, and we need more Sidney's in the world.

I am Sidnies sister Sheila and I have to say she is and has always been a really nice person. She really lives "Do onto others"...walks the talk if you know what I mean. It is nice to have someone notice. Thanks Andy.I agree we need more Sids in the world.

Sheila, if you read this, thank you and your sister for helping Andy out in a time of need. I am Andy's wife Dee, the first comment. Merry Christmas to your whole family, and what a wonderful family you all are........:)
