The field of flags
I told you I had something to show you...well here it is.
This is the Field of Flags at Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, VA. The sign says there are 2411 flags, representing those men and women that have lost their lives in the defense of freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was told that there are actually 2415 flags and the sign is being updated today. The folks at the church use the DoD web site to keep this display up to date. I looked at the DoD website and I really can't figure out what numbers they use. It's a little confusing to me. When I look at the site I come up with bigger numbers than they do, but hey, it's their Field of Flags, not mine. They also have those who paid the ultimate price listed by state.
I bet there are some folks that will say that their state is more patriotic than your state, based on the number of casualties. If you actually believed that then California would be the most patriotic state. It's probably more of a population thing...
I don't know what drives people to enter the military. I did it when I was 17 and I only did it to get away from my parents who were suffocating me at the time (at least that's what I thought). I wanted to see the world! Yeah, I bought into all those navy commercials. I just wish I'd seen the Saturday Night Live skit that I always called, "port of call, Port Newark, NJ! It always showed Garrett Morris swabbing the deck and painting the ship. I never realized how good a janitor I could be!
The Field of Flags was reported on by WAVY-TV channel 10 last night here in Virginia Beach. I seriously doubt that you've heard about it if you're not here in Tidewater.
The folks at the Providence Presbyterian Church say this is not a political statement. I say it should be a political statement. As a matter of fact, I say it IS
a political statement...and I agree with it! Shouldn't there be people screaming about the separation of state and church? I mean, come on...all those flags on church property?
I picked one of the pictures that I took in particular so that my "progressive" (read liberal) "friends" can see how close this egregiuos violation of church and state is to a public school! Can you see the school speed limit sign in the background? There's a public school there...and all those poor children will have to see this on their way to and from school! This is just terrible! What will they think? How will they survive? They're only subjected to ONE flag in the classroom. Now they'll get a field of them on the way to and from school. Scarred for life...poor babies!
Well, just so you wrong headed people can relax, the Field of Flags will only be there for another month. Then it follows the geese to Florida. I hope it ends up in a dixie democrat area and not some liberal stronghold like Miami/Dade!
I'll finish by saying I don't go to church. Like Jesse the Gov said, organized religion is a sham. I have my discussions with the Man upstairs on my own terms. I think he listens better that way. God and I had a discussion just this morning. He told me if you don't like this field you can kiss his...
He didn't say that...I did!
