The Danube is on the rise!
Last weekend I drove down to Lake Constance, or Bondensee as the Germans call it. Little did I know that this week Lake Constance would come to Ulm.
The Danube runs right through Ulm and New Ulm, luckily I’m staying in Ulm, which from the pictures you can see, is a little bit higher up than New Ulm. To understand the perspective of the pictures, you have to understand that I’m standing on a wall that’s at least 20 feet high! I’ve heard the Danube called the Blue Danube, well today, it’s the Brown Danube!
I’m sure some of you have seen the news from Austria and Switzerland about the flooding from all the rain. Well, it’s reached Ulm. At least the level of the Danube has risen about 4 or 5 feet since I got here! I’m told that it may get worse!
I wish I had taken some pictures of the river the first weekend I was here. It’s normally nice and blue and flows slowly. You see the ducks, geese and swans just kind of swimming along and picking whatever they pick out of the water.
Now, they’re sitting on the tops of park benches waiting for the river to slow down a bit!
There’s a ferry that crosses the river, I don’t know where the small ferry boat is, but it’s not at the dock! The dock is almost gone!
You can walk along the river banks. There’s normally about 30 yards between the wall and the river. Not today! I think I know why they built that wall back in the day…keep the river out of the town! It appears to be working. Ulm is dry and so far, New Ulm is dry. I have seen places in Ulm where people are pumping out there basements. I hope they were smart enough to move stuff out of them before the water came!
I also have a short 20 second video I took with my digital. I'll try to add it here later. I have limited internet access, so this is all you get for now. You can click on the pictures to see them in full size.
When it drops back down, if it drops back down, I’ll post some pictures so you can see the difference!
