Physician heal thyself!
An article by Dr. Thomas Whelan in the Virginian-Pilot asks the question who’s refereeing the referees in high school sports. I say this is not the question we should be asking ourselves. The question should be, who’s teaching our kids to be hoodlums? He speaks of bench clearing brawls and the like and asks, “where are the referees?”. I ask, “Where are the parents?” Why is it always someone else’s fault when your kids act up? He says that referees are the only people who can control the game. I say that’s baloney! I would have used a stronger word, but this is a family paper.
In professional sports, if a player does something on the field and the refs miss it, the league will mete out punishment at a later time. If coaches, parents and administrators see this kind of behavior, maybe they should give out game suspensions and the like at a later time.
I’m sorry Dr. Whelan, but sportsmanship starts at home. Don’t blame the referees.
